The focus in my work is referencing the human figure and specifically portraiture to express some element of what makes us human, an emotion that we can identify with in describing the human condition, in relation to existing in the world and beyond but also specifically in existing in Africa. I draw inspiration from aspects of my life, people and events around me, what I observe from social media platforms and also from international art, past and present.

I usually start with an idea, do a rough compositional sketch and then let the painting develop or change on the canvas as I go along. I have always been interested in experimenting, using the creative processes of painting, drawing, printing and sculpture, and within these media, I often incorporate collage using different materials like tissue paper, paper string and more recently traditional African fabrics. Perseverance and a never-ending passion to create in new and meaningful ways pushes me to continue with my creative journey. I find there are always exciting new developments, and sources of inspiration around every corner as I experiment with ideas using different materials.”

The beauty of nature is awe-inspiring. Glorious in her splendour, she connects us to our pathway and guides us graciously through our human experience. She is there, generation after generation,  reminding us about  the delicate balance of life. These five heads pay  homage to the time-tested experience and knowledge of age, something we all tend to forget. African culture has always been about respecting our elders, as we look to them for guidance through life.

Thus, Michele's reference to these beautiful, weathered busts (faces) is a tribute to the oldest trees known to man... each one a reflection of the time taken to mature and to develop steadfast root systems as they connect with the earth, defining unity  and strength.

Take time to reflect on your family, where you come from, who came before and what sacrifices were made to get you to where you are. Respect. Love. Life.
